Hillfire Dol is the pseudonym of Mr Sean P. Ransom, an independent musician, technologist and unconventional thinker based in Stevenage, Hertfordshire.
His interests occupy the territory where music, engineering, psychology, geography, philosophy and chance collide. Rather than following a single discipline, his work is characterised by curiosity: taking an idea apart, examining it from first principles, and occasionally putting it back together in a form nobody quite expected.
Music
Music has remained a constant throughout Sean’s life. A guitarist and electronic musician, he works with electric guitar, synthesisers, sequencers, drum machines and recording technology, while retaining a particular affection for the immediacy of an acoustic guitar.
Under the name Hillfire Dol, music is less about polished convention and more exploration-oriented. His studio combines traditional musicianship with modern electronic instruments, sequencing and sound design—a working sound laboratory as much as a recording space.
Technology & Engineering
Sean gained an HNC in Mechanical & Production Engineering at Stevenage College before later studying Engineering at the University of Warwick as a mature student. He has maintained a strong practical interest in electronics, computing and instrumentation.
His projects range from Arduino-based devices and precision clocks to random-number systems and geographic software. He generally approaches technology from first principles: understand what the machine is actually doing, build something, test it, and improve it.
One of his principal projects is METEOR®, a dice-based geographic system for generating uniformly distributed random locations on Earth. METEOR combines physical randomness, spherical geometry and GIS software to turn the entire planet into an experimental playing field—sometimes finding settlements, sometimes deserts, and quite frequently putting its creator in the soup.
Psychology & Human Behaviour
Sean completed a Diploma in Modern Applied Psychology (DMAP) in 2026 and subsequently began further study in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).
His longstanding interest is not simply in psychological theory, but in how people actually think, behave, communicate and construct meaning.
This extends into his philosophical experiments, including The Arbitrary Life Test—a thought experiment examining how our psychological response to human life changes when people are represented as statistics rather than individuals.
An Unconventional Life
Sean’s route through life has not been particularly conventional.
He has worked as a research technician, draughtsman and mechanic, studied engineering, pursued anthropology, built electronic devices, written software, made music and developed his own philosophical and religious ideas. In 2017 he underwent intensive treatment for acute myeloid leukaemia, an experience that inevitably altered his perspective on life, mortality and the value assigned to an individual human existence.
That same year saw the foundation of the Abcordial Religion, an independently developed religious and philosophical framework concerned with existence, ethics, human rights, respect for life and environmental sustainability.
Underlying these apparently disparate interests is essentially one activity:
asking questions.
- Why do we do things this way?
- What happens if we change the assumptions?
- What does the evidence actually say?
- Can we build something that tests the idea?
And, occasionally:
Where on Earth will the dice send us today?
